3 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Subaru Car Battery

April 20th, 2023 by

All of your vehicle’s parts need proper care, but one component that needs special attention is your Subaru car battery. Without a battery, your car isn’t going anywhere, so we recommend you follow this advice on battery care from the mechanics here at Serra Subaru Champaign.

Avoid Excessive Idling

It can be tempting to just idle your car if you’re picking someone up from somewhere or waiting for your passenger to run into a place and come right out. Excessive idling can harm your battery though. This is because your car can recharge your battery a bit when you drive, but if you’re just sitting there the battery isn’t recovering any energy at all.

Idling once in a while might be okay, but do it often and you’re slowly draining your battery. Then you’re running the risk of getting caught somewhere with a car that won’t start.

Check for Corrosion

It’s a good idea to open up the hood once in a while to check your battery for corrosion. This is a blue-green dust that can gather on the connectors.

A paste of baking soda and water can be used to remove corrosion safely. There are also special battery cleaning sprays out there. We recommend bringing it into our Subaru service center and having corrosion problems taken care of when you need other maintenance or repairs.

Limit Short Trips

Short trips aren’t as good for your battery. When you can, combine a few shorter trips into a longer one. This allows your battery to charge up more and stay in good health.
